    Thanks for this. I saw the Coen Brother’s version of True Grit recently and enjoyed it, and also noticed that absence of contractions (there may have been a few but none that I noticed). I was also curious about whether contractions at the time were widely used or not. Your article and also the article from the Grammarphobia blog helped a great deal.
